Jürgen Franz is professor for flute at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg and a member of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg.

The flautist studied as a pre student at the Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory in Frankfurt and then began his studies at the Frankfurt Music University. After the pre-diploma, Jürgen Franz moved to the Music University in Stuttgart to study with Jean Claude Gérard.

Further studies led Jürgen Franz to Maxence Larrieu in Geneva and to Sir James Galway in Lucerne.

Jürgen Franz began his orchestral career with the Bielefeld Philharmonic. He then took up the position of first flutist with the Stuttgart Philharmonic and since August 2000 Jürgen Franz has been a member of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg.

In addition to guest performances with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and others, Jürgen Franz regularly played as solo flautist with the orchestra of La Scala in Milan. He was also a member of the orchestra at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival. Jürgen Franz was invited by Lorin Maazel to play as solo flutist in the „Symphonica Toscanini“ orchestra.

Radio and CD productions as well as numerous solo concerts have taken him to France, America, Japan, China, Hungary, Estonia and Switzerland.

Solo CD recordings such as „Flute Trios from France„, „European Recital“ and „Sonatas by J. M. Leclair“ with Maxence Larrieu, have been released on the Tyxart and Chant de Linos labels. His latest album „the poetic flute“ can be heard on all streaming platforms.

As editor, Jürgen Franz has arranged works for flute and piano, including works by Debussy, Wagner and Brahms. His own written fantasies for flute and piano on  „La Bohème“, „Turandot“ and “Butterfly”  have quickly become popular works in the flute repertoire all over the world.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Jürgen Franz performs at internationally renowned music and flute festivals, he is also in demand as a jury member at international competitions. His passion as a teacher led him to numerous master classes in Germany and abroad.

Jürgen Franz is artist for „W.S. Haynes Flutes” and plays a 19.5k gold flute made by the famous American flute manufacture.
